14th Annual Meeting – Presidential Closing Statement

Dear ISAER members,

The 14th Annual Meeting is now closed.

Since this is the last Annual Meeting that I chair as President of ISAER, I would like to highlight and share a few points on which I believe we should keep a strong focus in the next years.

In my opinion, we need to maintain and possibly expand high-quality educational activities on emergy theory/accounting and systems ecology. We must support the education of the future generation of emergy scientists while ensuring that a high scientific standard is always maintained. For this goal, we should continue supporting the organization of emergy seminars and courses worldwide. Another important task, useful for properly supporting educational activities, is producing an updated emergy textbook for university students and other material (brochures, policy briefs) for policy-makers.

We must continue improving an active and effective communication strategy, involving all the Society members using all the possible tools (website, social media).

The Society should also focus on ensuring that existing scientific journals provide room for publishing good quality emergy papers, also through specific editorial initiatives (special issues, books, new journals).

The continued standardization of the emergy method and the creation of a common and shared emergy database is another priority of the Society to be more and more understood, appreciated, and acknowledged by the international scientific community.

An effort should be made to always keep an open dialogue with the practitioners of other environmental accounting methods and scientists from other disciplines.

Lastly, it is important to maintain good quality standards in terms of Society management and related procedures.

I am very confident that the new President of ISAER will provide effective leadership, and I trust that the whole Executive Council and Society members will properly support her work.

It has been a great honor for me to act as President of ISAER, and I would like to sincerely thank all the Executive Council members for their support.

Finally, I would like to encourage all the ISAER members to actively participate in the Society’s activities. Your participation is much needed and appreciated.

My best wishes, ad maiora!

Pier Paolo Franzese
